MiMi Mei Fair – Chinese New Year 2025

Chinese New year fell on 29 January 2025 – Year of the Snake. This year is all about transformation, evolution and precision. ” A snake that cannot shed its old skin perishes”

With this year being all about transformation, I should really transform into more of a creature of habit and remain consistent with these blogs. It’s been a while, but i haven’t stopped eating, or reviewing, I’ve just not shared my outings, but I’m back to it.

Good chinese food in London is hard to come by, so many of the dishes across various restaurants are too similar in look and flavour, but MiMi Mei Fair did peak my interest with this set menu choice.

MiMi Mei Fair is located in a three-storey Georgian townhouse, the dining spaces are elegant and cosy. For Chinese New Year they have a beautiful symbolic wishing tree which transforms the top floor dining space, a really nice touch.

Before I get into the food, I’ll start with the cocktail that can be purchased as part of the menu, Forbidden Elixir. It was light, refreshing and right up my street. I could have had ten, although maybe not because I don’t actually drink that much. A decorative cucumber snake and you have a themed cocktail winner.

The starters were great, okra was crunchy and flavoursome, the prawns were VERY good and the dim sum was steamed to delightful perfection. The truffle edamame was impressive, though an odd texture.

The mains included Kung Pao Chicken, Chilean Seabass, Crispy Norfolk Pork, Hakka Noodles and Stir fry Green Beans. The chicken was super spicy and really rich with cashews scattered in the sauce. The seabass was melt in the mouth, with a sticky soy sauce. The pork was sweet and sour and battered well. The green beans and noodles were both well seasoned and the dishes all complimented each other well. For anyone who cares, the lobster was delicious, but not worth the £75 extra pp price tag and no tools to properly extract the flesh.

Dessert was surprisingly good. The chocolate pour doesn’t really get old, and anything chocolate gets my buy in anyway.

We finished our meal writing cards for the red envelope to go on the wishing tree, a nice touch (though I had to ask before they let us do this). I’d definitely go back to try a few different dishes, this restaurant is a wonderful escape from the London hustle and bustle.
